How does oil flow through an engine?
The pump sends the oil up to the main bearings of the crankshaft (in the lower middle), which converts linear energy into rotational energy. From there, the oil moves through oil holes drilled in the crankshaft, to the rod bearings, and then through an oil line to the cylinder head (in the upper middle).
How does oil get into the combustion chamber?
Oil collecting on the stems of intake valves is sucked into the combustion chamber during normal operation. Hot exhaust gases burn oil on stems of the exhaust valves. If there’s too much clearance between the valve stems and guides, the engine will suck more oil down the guides and into the cylinders.

If the engine is leaking oil from the top, this could indicate that there is an issue with your valve cover gasket. On top of your engine, you’ll find a valve cover protecting the components inside the cylinder head. As you probably guessed, a gasket provides a seal between the cylinder head and valve cover.

How does the lubricant work in an engine?
As the shaft begins to rotate inside the bearing, it will be lubricated only by boundary lubrication until pressurized oil fills the clearance between the shaft and bearing. Once up to speed, the shaft will drag around the oil, to create a wedge of lubricant underneath (where pressure is highest) which lifts the shaft and centers it in the bearing.
How does the oil filter work in a car?
The folds provide a large filtering area within a small container. If the filter becomes clogged a special valve called the bypass valve will open and allow the oil to go to the engine parts without going through the filter. Another valve prevents the oil from draining out of the filter when the engine is stopped.
How is pressure maintained in the bottom of the engine?
Pressure can be maintained in the bottom end of the engine through the use of a restrictor, which is a constricted passageway that reduces the flow of oil between the engine block and cylinder head. In the illustrated engine, the oil restrictor is in the top of the engine block and all the oil for the head flows through this restrictor.
