The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Bridion (sugammadex) injection to reverse the effects of neuromuscular blockade induced by rocuronium bromide and vecuronium bromide, which are used during certain types of surgery in adults.
What is a back block?
You’ll need what Sarah calls a back block; they’re also known as yoga bricks. Roughly the size of a house brick, they come in a variety of materials including wood, bamboo, cork and foam — I usually use one made of solid foam, though in an emergency I have also been known to use a hardback copy of a Harry Potter book!

Nerve blocks, or neural blockades, are procedures that can help prevent or manage many different types of pain. They are often injections of medicines that block pain from specific nerves. They can be used for pain relief as well as total loss of feeling if needed for surgery.
Can a nerve block cause permanent damage?
Permanent nerve damage after a peripheral nerve block is very rare. The most common type of nerve damage causes an area of numb skin which is very likely to resolve within a few weeks.
How long do nerve blocks last?
This depends on the type of block performed and the type of numbing medication used. For example, nerve blocks for hand surgery usually last for 6-8 hours, but a nerve block for pain after total knee replacement can last for 12-24 hours.

A brick-like rubber or plastic device placed under the upper torso, which elevates the chest, maximizing exposure of the trunk for incisions.
What are the side effects of a spinal block?

- Allergic reaction to the anesthesia used.
- Bleeding around the spinal column (hematoma)
- Difficulty urinating.
- Drop in blood pressure.
- Infection in your spine (meningitis or abscess)
- Nerve damage.
- Seizures (this is rare)
- Severe headache.
What to do when you have a blocked back?
Use an ice pack and an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen. After the inflammation calms down, a heating pad or pack can help soothe muscles and connective tissue. If you have chronic back pain, sleep on a medium-firm mattress.
How long does a nerve block in the back last?
The effects of the injection are usually immediate. It only takes a short time for the medication to achieve pain relief. However, nerve blocks are only a temporary fix—they typically last for up to one or two weeks and then wear off as your body absorbs them.
Is a spinal nerve block painful?
