Why is my starter not disengaging?
Check your ignition switch. You want to make sure that the power does not stay on once your ignition switch is released. This continuous power to the starter can cause it not to disengage. The reason for this may be a bad switch or the cables may have a short.
What would cause a starter not to shut off?
So, if your starter keep running, the problem could be stuck starter relay contacts, a continuous ground on the starter relay control coil, or a binding ignition lock cylinder that keeps the actually ignition switch in the START position. If the starter motor stops, you’ve found the problem.
Why does my starter keep running with ignition off?

Could a bad starter drain the battery?
A ‘bad’ starter wont drain the battery while it is not being used to start the car, if that is what you mean. If the starter has a damaged commutator, it will not run at full power and so could mean that you have to turn the engine over longer to get the engine to start which will use more energy from the battery.
Why would a starter stay engaged?
Typically what happens is the excess current created as a result of the low voltage causes the contact within the solenoid to weld together or even burn through. Welded contacts can cause the starter to stay engaged with the engines ring-gear and should the engine actually start the high revolutions will cause the starter to blow apart inside.
Why does starter stay engaged?
First of all it depends ; if the starter stays momentarily engaged with the remote only it may be a faulty module that fails to detect the engine rpm hence why it stays engaged (the default starting time is about 5-10 seconds cranking time depending on the manufacturer, if the engine fails to start the module stop the cranking) If the symptom is the same even when using the ignition switch you may have a faulty starter clutch (commonly referred as a Bendix) and/or a faulty return spring.
Why does a starter motor not engage?
The single biggest thing that can cause a remote starter not to engage is a faulty or missing hood switch. This device gets installed under the hood of your vehicle and prevents the engine from starting when the hood is up.
